Tommie Lee Gates

Mr. Tommie Lee Gates was born June 13, 1936 in Coosa County, AL to the late Mr. Jim Dorsey & Ms. Sarah Gates.

 Tommie answered the call to come home and rest from his labor, Friday, January 16, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones in Alexander City.

 Tommie accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at the Corinth Baptist Church in Kellyton, AL, years later he joined New Elam Baptist Church in Kellyton, AL where he served  faithfully on the Usher board until his health failed.

 Tommie was employed with Russell Corporation in Alexander City as a truck driver. He transported yarn from the Alex City plant to the Coosa plant; he retired after many dedicated years of service. After retiring, Tommie continued to live life with purpose and humility. Tommie believed in doing things the right way, working hard, treating others with respect, and trusting God through every step.

 Tommie was very helpful throughout his church and community. He loved farming and raising cattle. He worked tirelessly and faithfully until his health began to fail at the age of 85. His quiet strength, warm smile, and unwavering faith was a comfort to all who knew him.

 Although he was wasn’t a biological father, he was a father figure to many kids; old and young, he would always give wisdom and a great word of encouragement to guide them through every day living.

 Tommie was preceded in death by the love of his life of sixty–six years Mrs. Mary Ruth Gates, his parents Mr. Jim Dorsey & Ms. Sarah Gates, and his sister, Ms. Sallie Gate.

 Tommie precious memories will be forever be cherished by his sister-in-law & brother–in-law Jewel and Athur Russell both of Alexander City, AL. They shared a bond filled with love and care and devotion. A special first cousin, Mrs. Annie Pearl Jones, whom he talked to on a regular basis, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
