Mrs. Barbara Dexter Obituary

It is with both a heavy heart and profound gratitude that we share the passing of beloved, Barbara White Dexter, who departed this life on August 5, 2025, surrounded by those who loved her most. Barbara was more than a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend—she was a guiding light whose life was rooted in faith, service, and love.

Born on January 21, 1948, in Mobile, AL, Barbara was the daughter of Alese and Costello White Sr. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Costello White Jr. and Vera Ellen White, and her grandchild Devin Landrum Dexter.

She is survived by her brother, Ludivic White Sr., and a wide circle of family who cherished her deeply.

Barbara and surviving husband, David L. Dexter Sr., shared a lifetime of partnership built on mutual respect and unwavering love. Together, they raised two incredible sons, David L Dexter Jr. (Kawana) and Desmond L. Dexter (Autumn), and watched with pride as their family grew to included cherished grandchildren: Malachi, Myles, Dallan, Macayla, Jada, Trinity, Rylee, and Jeremy. She also leaves behind sisters-in-law Mary Willis, Dianne Dexter, Keisha White; brothers-in-law Melvin Willis Sr. and Lewis Dexter; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Barbara’s calling to teach was evident from the beginning. A proud alumna of Central High School and Alabama State University, she earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. Barbara was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  For 29 years, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds as a Physical Education teacher at Alexander City Middle School. Her influence extended beyond the classroom—she inspired generations with her compassion, discipline, and unwavering belief in her students.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. As a devoted member of Great Bethel Baptist Church, Barbara sang in the choir and led the praise teams with both joy and reverence. Even after retirement, she remained active in the community, teaching water aerobics at Russell Medical Center and traveling across the country with her husband as proud members of the Central Alabama RV Association. One of her greatest joys was celebrating Mardi Gras in her hometown of Mobile, where the parades brought her endless delight.
