A Celebration of Life and Legacy:  Mr. Johnnie Meadows Jr.

Johnnie Meadows Jr. was born September 1, 1928 to Mr. Johnnie B. and Mrs. Margaret Meadows in Tarrant City, Alabama.

At an early age, Johnnie gave his life to Christ and was a member of Kellyton Chapel United Methodist Church.  At a young age, Johnnie took on the role of “Man of the house” and stepped away from school to work and take care of his Mom, brothers, and sisters. He served as a Lay Leader for many years and song and sponsored “Note Singings” for over 17 years. Johnnie was a Truck Driver for 49 years; driving for The Saw Mill, Russell Pipe and Foundry, and Avondale Mills.  After retiring at the age of 62 from driving trucks, Johnnie also worked for Russell Mills and Winn Dixie.  Johnnie enjoyed reciting and listening to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, listening to “his” sermons, telling stories about his truck driving days & working at the “Pipe shop” and the goodness of the Lord.

Johnnie was married to Mary Mahala (Leonard) Meadows until her death in September 2004.  To this union, 16 children were born: (8) boys and (8) girls.

Johnnie departed this life Wednesday morning, August 7, 2024.  He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, his wife, Mary Mahala Meadows, 1 son, Johnnie Lewis Meadows and 2 daughters, Belinda Denise “Niece” Meadows and Bonita Meadows.

 Johnnie leaves to cherish his memories Seven Sons: SGM Elder Lauria “Larry” (Pamelyn) Meadows of Huntsville, AL, LTC Kevin T. Meadows of Alexander City, AL, SFC LaTerence (Kimberly) Meadows of Kellyton, AL, Karl Meadows of Kellyton, AL, Barry (Karen) Meadows of Kellyton, AL, Keith (Kahalia) Meadows of Alexander City, AL, & Lavor Meadows of Kellyton, AL; Six daughters: Patricia Meadows of Kellyton, AL, Mary Ann Meadows of Montgomery, AL, SSG Brenda J. Meadows-Townes of Birmingham, AL, Elder Pamela T. (Charles) Higgins of Columbia, SC, Monica W. McCord of Montgomery, AL & Toinette M. Williams of Montgomery, AL.

He also leaves to cherish his memories 2 sisters: Mrs. Myrtle Ellington of Alexander City, AL and Ms. Vella Johnson of Detroit, Michigan; Several Grandchildren, Xavier and Johnathan Williams (Grandsons who assisted with his care), Great grandchildren and Great, Great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives, cousins and close friends.

Johnnie had many sayings: such as “It’s a good day to say Hello!” “I feel better (or I’m better) now I heard from you!” “I ain’t old, I just been here a long time!” “If somebody do something good for you, it don’t take but a minute to say “Thank you”!” and his most famous in his last years of life: “That’s Jesus Work!”
