James Douglas Bennett Sr. the second son born to the late Doshie and James Claude Bennett transitioned to his mansion on March 19, 2017 . He was preceded in death by his brother, Claude Mack Bennett and his beloved wife of 51 years, Ammie Bennett.
James confessed his love for Jesus Christ at an early age at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church where he also served as church musician until he joined the U. S. Army.
Prof., J. D., or Jay as he was known to many earned his Bachelor’s Degree from his beloved Talladega College; his post graduate degrees were earned at the University of Wyoming and Tuskegee (Institute) University. He was also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
James devoted his entire career to public education in the Coosa County and Alexander City School Systems as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent.
He married the love of his life, Ammie Richardson and to this union they were blessed with Dorothea and Doug.
Mr. Bennett leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Dorothea (Frank, Sr.) Walker; son, James Douglas Bennett, Jr. of Alexander City, AL. Three grandsons: Jason (Christina) and Frank Walker, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; and James Douglas Bennett, III of Montgomery, AL. Granddaughter, Jamila Walker (Jevan Wheeler) of Montgomery, AL Three great grandchildren: Chase, Chaz, and Chanz of Montgomery, AL. Two aunts: Ruth Moten and Arene Jackson. Four sisters-in-law: Frances Bennett, Rebecca Michaels, Easter (Robert) Jackson, and Louise Bradley-Johnson. Two brothers-in-law: Melvin Richardson and Gullice Richardson. A very special cousin, Margaret (S.B.) Sutton. His best friend, companion and granddog, Pepper. A devoted caregiver and friend, Ruby Edwards. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, former students and friends.
